Résumé : “Controlling structure and thereby manipulating the useproperties of condensed matter is a central concern in materialsscience. A striking disparity exists in our ability to enact suchstructural control in self-assembled soft materials, relative to hardcondensed matter systems. In this talk we examine strategies fordirecting self-assembly in nanostructured soft materials to createsingle crystals and bespoke textures. Our work elucidates physicalprocesses that are relevant for such directed self-assembly, inpart by leveraging in situ scattering tools, with an overall goal ofexploiting fundamental understanding to create useful materialsor devices. In particular, we consider the use of magnetic fields andconfinement effects for directed self-assembly of soft mesophasesof block copolymers and discotic liquid crystals. The ability toproduce highly ordered functional materials over macroscopiclength scales is demonstrated. We explore the role of alignmentand connectivity in creating materials with highly anisotropic iontransport, and in creating highly selective nanofiltration memaneswith uniformly aligned nanopores produced by molecular selfassembly.Application of orthogonal fields, and field processingacross sequential phase transitions enables a novel realization ofmacroscopic single crystals of self-assembled mesophases withprecisely specified texture. Recent progress on low field (sub-1 T)alignment and the associated potential to develop bespoke texturesin block copolymers using local field screening are presented.”
