Financial support

There are many scholarships for students at all levels in the Department of Chemistry. The options and conditions are outlined below.

 

Minimum guaranteed funding

All graduate students in the Department of Chemistry are guaranteed minimum funding that is comparable with what is offered in other Departments of Chemistry at other major Canadian universities. Note that tuition fees in Quebec are significantly lower than in any other province in Canada.

 

GRADUATE

In addition to the graduate scholarships described below, there are those awarded by NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) and FRQ-NT (Fonds de recherche du Québec - Nature et technologies).

Several students receive NSERC postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) awards of $17,300/year and $21,000/year, respectively. A small number of prestigious NSERC awards are valued at $35,000/year. FRQ-NT graduate awards are valued at $15,000 (MSc) and $20,000 (PhD).

For all NSERC and FRQ-NT scholarships, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FESP) or the thesis supervisor offers a supplement to the award recipient. The Department of Chemistry also offers teaching assistantships in undergraduate laboratories at a level of approximately $3,000/semester to supplement research stipends.

FESP scholarships

The FESP also administers a number of scholarships, some of them for international students, to support their studies at the Université de Montréal:

  • Intake scholarships ($2,000)
  • Excellence Awards for international students ($17,500 to $20,500/year)
  • FESP Excellence Awards
  • Scholarships exempting students from differential tuition fees
  • Scholarships in partnership with certain Chinese universities

Description :

The André-Beauchamp scholarship is awarded to a graduate student for his or her excellence as a teaching assistant.

The scholarship fund was created by colleagues and former students in tribute to Professor André Beauchamp, a key figure in the Department of Chemistry for over 45 years.

Other sources of income

If you are an MSc- or PhD-level student, you may be able to supplement your scholarship funding through a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or sessional lecturer position.

Under the collective agreement between the Université de Montréal and the employed students union (Syndicat des étudiants et étudiantes employé(e)s de the Université de Montréal (SÉÉEUM)), eligible students must apply for positions posted by the Department (in French).

Teaching assistants (laboratory demonstrator or course tutor)

A teaching assistant (lab demonstrator or tutor) is a Université de Montréal student, registered full time at the graduate level, who assists a professor or lecturer in supporting and supervising undergraduate students.

Teaching assistants invigilate exams, correct assignments and exams, perform laboratory demonstrations, lead undergraduate tutorials, etc.

Research assistant

A research assistant is a Université de Montréal student, full time at the undergraduate level or generally full time at the graduate level, hired to assist professors, researchers and units with research work.

Lecturer

A person hired part-time by the University to deliver class lectures. Duties include preparing and teaching courses according to different pedagogical methods and formulas, updating course content, preparing teaching materials according to the pedagogical methods and formulas used, evaluating students' performance, including, if applicable, revising student evaluations and preparing and correcting deferred examinations, and availability or supervision relating to course preparation and delivery.

UNDERGRADUATE

The Department of Chemistry offers merit and other scholarships to undergraduate students. The Department's undergraduate scholarships are listed below, along with NSERC scholarships.

All scholarships available to students are listed in one place.

NSERC scholarships

Every summer, about 12 undergraduate students in the Department of Chemistry are awarded summer internship scholarships of $4,500 from the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), allowing them to conduct research in one of the Department’s laboratories. In addition, many other students receive summer stipends from professors’ research grants enabling them to work in the Department’s laboratories.

Description :

The HyperChem software and a certificate are awarded to a student for overall excellence throughout his or her undergraduate studies and interest in chemical computation.

Analytical Chemistry Prize

Description :

A 1-year subscription to the journal Analytical Chemistry, published by the American Chemical Society.

Eligibility criteria :

Excellence in the area of analytical chemistry within the first 2 years of undergraduate study.

Faculty of Arts and Science scholarships

Description :

Every year, the Faculty of Arts and Science awards scholarships funded by donors to 11 undergraduate students for overall academic excellence since the start of their program. The Department recommends its top students based on grades in the winter term.

A fund created in 1956 in memory of Georges Baril, Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1947 to 1953 and Chair of the Department of Chemistry from 1931 to 1951, at the initiative of Professor Roger Barré.
